Just sit there and accumulate those experiences. It's a slacker's dream come true. I'd be all, "Sign me up, and let me experience a Frappuccino while I'm at it".

But Alex wasn't so sure. He couldn't articulate why, exactly, but intuitively, this Experience Machine thing didn't sound right to him. His parents played hard-ball with him: "But Alex, the Experience Machine could give you any experience you could possibly want. You could fly! You could jump over tall buildings! You could go back in time and visit the dinosaurs!"

Alex was skeptical. Finally, he said, "I know an experience it wouldn't let me have."

"What's that, sweetie?"

"I bet it wouldn't let me walk on numbers."

I won't begrudge the expense but I was just getting on top of my finances - no more debt, building up a nice little nest egg...Le sigh...

Our suite in the soulless office park has a hallway that connects the front and back parts of the building. At one end of the hall sits a mysterious, 1985-ish computer terminal with orange letters on a black, eighty-character-by-twenty-four-line screen. The screen is always on, flashing cryptic messages and symbols. So I was running through the hallway, frustrated by a high-tech copier and late for a meeting, when my right leg hit the terminal. Hard. “Hmm,” thinks me. “Is this computer important? Someone told me why it’s always on. Why was that again? Eh, whatever. I’m late.” Shortly thereafter, my co-workers began complaining that they could no longer make outgoing phone calls. Then I remembered—the hallway computer controls soulless office park telecommunications. Soon after this incident, I blew up a database. And then this morning my hairdryer exploded in a shower of blue sparks. To minimize the impact of this destructive phase and to make sure no one sees my horrible, naturally-dried hair, I plan to keep a low profile for the next few days. This means no blogging, lest I crash the Internet.

Soon after that, I can start to harass the produce guy at Reading Terminal Market. Good Grief! has never affected my social life, but I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t impacted my quality of life. Add time for getting links and clipart and for reading and commenting on everyone else’s sites, and the whole “blogging” hobby starts to eat up some serious hours.
